Questions from UK Parents

They do different jobs, and they run happily together. Your broadband filter works at the connection: it blocks adult and known-harmful websites for every device on your home wifi. It cannot see inside YouTube, so youtube.com is either allowed in full or blocked in full, and it stops working the moment your child leaves the wifi. WhitelistVideo works inside YouTube itself: it blocks every video by default and plays only the channels you approve, and it follows the device onto mobile data, to a friend's house and to Gran's. Keep the filter on; add WhitelistVideo for YouTube.

Family Link is the right foundation on Android, and WhitelistVideo is built to run on top of it. Family Link's YouTube option gives you a choice of broad content tiers (Older kids 9+, Teens 13+, Older teens 16+, formerly 'Explore', 'Explore more' and 'Most of YouTube') that YouTube's own systems decide; it cannot approve individual channels. WhitelistVideo adds channel-level approval, and it uses Family Link as the lock: on an Android phone or tablet, WhitelistVideo + Family Link cannot be removed without the Family Link parent account.

It makes platforms do more. Since 25 July 2025, Ofcom's Protection of Children Codes require services likely to be accessed by children to use age checks and to filter the most harmful content, and Ofcom had issued 16 fines by March 2026. What the Act does not do is decide which of YouTube's millions of channels are right for your nine-year-old, or stop Shorts. That part is still yours, and it is exactly the part WhitelistVideo is built for.

Yes, as announced. On 15 June 2026 the Government said it will bring in an under-16 ban with YouTube in scope (YouTube Kids is not), with regulations due by the end of 2026 and enforcement from spring 2027. Australia's ban, live since December 2025, shows what to expect: under-16 YouTube accounts fell from 33% to 23% in three months, and children kept watching signed out. A ban covers accounts. WhitelistVideo covers what actually plays, signed in or out, tonight rather than next spring.

Not without your credentials. The protection is a pairing: WhitelistVideo + Screen Time on an iPhone or iPad can only be revoked with the parent's Apple Account; WhitelistVideo + Family Link on Android can only be removed by the Family Link parent; WhitelistVideo + a Standard (non-administrator) account on a Windows or Mac laptop can only be removed with the administrator password. If the extension or app ever cannot reach our servers, it blocks all of YouTube rather than letting anything through.

Not today. Fire tablets run Amazon's Fire OS without Google Play, so the WhitelistVideo child app is not available on them, and there is no Chrome extension on a tablet. What UK families do instead: keep Amazon Kids+ on the Fire tablet for the youngest, and put WhitelistVideo on the devices an 8- to 15-year-old actually uses for YouTube: their phone, an iPad, the family laptop or Chromebook, and the Android TV in the living room. One whitelist syncs across all of them.

WhitelistVideo's TV app runs on Android TV and Google TV, which covers Sony Bravia, Philips, TCL and Hisense Google TVs and a Chromecast with Google TV plugged into any set. Sky Glass, Sky Q, Fire TV Stick, Samsung and LG are on the roadmap and not yet supported. The usual fix for a Sky or Fire household is a Chromecast with Google TV (about £35): it turns any HDMI port into a screen that only plays approved channels, and you can hide the built-in YouTube app on the Sky or Fire box.

Shorts are blocked by default on every device and every plan. If you decide an older child can have them, one toggle in the dashboard allows Shorts for that child only. It is the single most-asked-for feature from UK parents.

Yes. There is a dedicated child app on the App Store, plus an Android child app on Google Play and an Android TV / Google TV app for the living room. The same whitelist syncs across every device.

Only if the school allows it. Most UK school Chromebooks are locked to the school's Google Workspace, which blocks extension installs. On the family's own Chromebook, laptop or phone, WhitelistVideo installs normally and filters YouTube completely.

Plans are per child, so you pay only for the children you protect. Basic is £6.49 a month per child and Premium is £16.49 a month per child, or £64.99 and £149.49 a year.
