Blocking YouTube on UK living-room devices: Sky Glass, Sky Q, Fire TV Stick, Samsung and LG
UK homes tend to watch YouTube through a Sky box or a Fire TV Stick rather than the TV's own app, so this section uses British menu names. Every one of these devices can lock or hide the YouTube app behind a PIN; none of them can pick which channels play inside it. Menu paths change with software updates, so treat the steps below as a map and check the manufacturer's help page if a menu has moved.
Sky Glass and Sky Stream
- Press Home on the remote, then open Settings > Parental controls (you may be asked for your Sky PIN).
- Set or change the PIN and choose the age rating that content must pass without the PIN.
- Open the YouTube app, go to its Settings and turn on Restricted Mode, then sign the TV into your child's supervised Google account so the Family Link settings you already use carry over.
- If your Sky software lets you hide or restrict individual apps, hide YouTube from the apps rail so it takes the PIN to reach it.
Sky's PIN governs Sky content and app access; it does not see inside YouTube, so Restricted Mode and the supervised account do the filtering.
Sky Q
- Press Home, then go to Settings > Parental > PIN and set a Family PIN.
- Set the rating that needs a PIN and turn on PIN on purchases while you are there.
- Open YouTube from Apps and turn on Restricted Mode in the app's settings.
Sky Q cannot PIN-lock the YouTube app on its own. If you want YouTube off the box completely, sign out of the app and use the TV's own app lock, or move the kids' viewing to a stick you control (below).
Amazon Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube
- Go to Settings > Preferences > Parental Controls and turn them on.
- Set a PIN, then turn on PIN-protect app launches so YouTube asks for the PIN every time.
- Optional: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > YouTube > Uninstall removes the app; the PIN then blocks reinstalling it from the Appstore.
- For children under 12, Amazon Kids gives a separate profile with its own approved apps; YouTube is not in it unless you add it.
Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS)
- Samsung: Settings > General > System Manager > Change PIN, then highlight YouTube on the Home bar, press and hold Select and choose Lock. The app now asks for the PIN.
- LG: Settings > General > System > Safety > Application Locks, turn Safety on, set the PIN and tick YouTube.
Where WhitelistVideo fits on these devices
WhitelistVideo's TV app is built for Android TV and Google TV, the one TV platform with a real app store parents can control: Sony Bravia, Philips, TCL, Hisense Google TV models, Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer, and NVIDIA Shield. That focus is what lets the app play only approved channels with Shorts off by default and settings behind a parent PIN. Sky Glass, Fire TV, Samsung and LG are on the roadmap and not yet supported, so on those devices the PIN steps above are what blocks the built-in YouTube app.
The fix that works on any telly with an HDMI port: plug in a Chromecast with Google TV (about £35 in the UK, $30-50 in the US), install WhitelistVideo for TV on it, then lock or hide the TV's own YouTube app with the PIN. On the Chromecast, set a parent PIN on the profile in its YouTube app and disable that app if it allows it (Settings → Apps → YouTube → Disable). The Chromecast becomes the only YouTube on that TV, and the channel list your child sees is the same one you approved for their phone and laptop.
How to set up YouTube parental controls on Apple TV
Apple TV has great general restrictions, but it’s a closed shop for YouTube apps.
Step-by-step setup
- Turn on Restricted Mode in the YouTube app.
- Go to Apple TV Settings > General > Restrictions.
- Create a passcode.
- You can hide the YouTube app entirely here if you want to take a break from it.
The "Nuclear Option"
If Restricted Mode is failing you, delete the YouTube app from the Apple TV. Then, have your child use AirPlay to send videos from an iPhone or iPad that *does* have WhitelistVideo installed. It’s an extra step, but it ensures you’ve vetted everything on the smaller screen first.
How to set up YouTube parental controls on Roku
Roku is the most difficult platform to secure. It lacks a way to lock YouTube settings with a PIN, and there are no third-party alternatives.
What you can do
- Turn on Restricted Mode in YouTube.
- Set a Roku PIN in the system settings.
- Enable the Channel Store PIN so they can't download new apps.
- Delete the main YouTube app and use YouTube Kids instead if they are young enough.
The reality of Roku
Roku is probably the worst choice for a family that cares about YouTube safety in 2026. There’s no way to lock the filter in place. If your kids are tech-savvy, they’ll bypass these "controls" in minutes. Consider getting a cheap streaming stick that actually supports parental apps.
How to set time limits on YouTube on TV
YouTube doesn't have a "shut off" timer. You have to use the TV's hardware or a third-party tool.

If all else fails, buy a smart plug. Set it to turn off at 8:00 PM. It's hard for a kid to argue with a TV that literally has no power.
