How to set up macOS Screen Time with WhitelistVideo
Add an extra layer of protection by using Apple Screen Time alongside WhitelistVideo. This prevents your child from using other browsers or uninstalling Chrome.
Maximum protection: Screen Time + PKG installer provides the strongest protection on Mac. Your child cannot remove the extension, use other browsers, or install bypass tools.
Disclaimer: The steps below are general guidance and may not reflect the latest macOS changes. Screen Time is an Apple feature not affiliated with WhitelistVideo. See Apple's official documentation (opens in a new tab) for current instructions.
What do I need for Screen Time protection?
- Your child's Mac (macOS 10.15 Catalina or later)
- An Apple ID for yourself (parent)
- An Apple ID for your child
- A separate Mac user account for your child (Standard, not Administrator)
- About 15-20 minutes for full setup
Critical: Your child must have a Standard Mac account, not an Administrator account. Administrator accounts can disable all protections.
How does Screen Time work with WhitelistVideo?
| Screen Time Does | WhitelistVideo Does |
|---|---|
| Blocks Safari and other browsers | Filters YouTube videos in Chrome |
| Prevents installing new apps | Locks extension so it cannot be removed |
| Sets time limits on apps | Provides parent dashboard for whitelist |
| Restricts content by age | Analyzes video content with AI |
Together, they provide comprehensive protection:
- Child can only use Chrome (Screen Time blocks other browsers)
- Chrome has WhitelistVideo locked in (PKG prevents removal)
- YouTube shows only approved videos (WhitelistVideo filtering)
- Child cannot install bypass tools (Screen Time blocks App Store)
How to create a child Mac account
If your child already has a Standard (non-admin) Mac account, skip to the next section.
On the Mac
-
Click the Apple menu () → System Settings
-
Click Users & Groups in the sidebar
-
Click Add User (you may need to unlock with your admin password)
-
For New Account, select Standard (not Administrator)
-
Enter your child's name
-
Create a password for the account
-
Click Create User
Never choose Administrator for a child's account. Administrator accounts can disable Screen Time, remove extensions, and bypass all protections.
For detailed instructions, see Mac child account setup.
How to set up Family Sharing
Family Sharing lets you manage your child's Screen Time from your own device.
On your Mac
-
Click Apple menu () → System Settings
-
Click your name at the top
-
Click Family Sharing
-
If you don't have a family group, click Set Up Family
-
Click Add Member → Create Child Account (if your child doesn't have an Apple ID)
-
Follow the prompts to create their Apple ID
For detailed instructions, see Apple's Family Sharing guide (opens in a new tab).
How to enable Screen Time
On your child's Mac account

Sign into your child's Mac user account
-
Go to System Settings → Screen Time
-
Click Turn On if not already enabled
-
Select This is My Child's Mac

Manage remotely via Family Sharing
If you set up Family Sharing, you can manage Screen Time from your own device:
-
On your Mac/iPhone/iPad, go to Settings → Screen Time
-
Under Family, click your child's name
-
Configure their settings remotely
How to block other browsers
This ensures your child can only use Chrome with WhitelistVideo.
Block Safari
-
Go to System Settings → Screen Time
-
Click Content & Privacy Restrictions
-
Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions (if not already on)
-
Click App Restrictions
-
Find Safari and toggle it OFF
Safari will be hidden from your child's account.
Block app installation
Prevent your child from downloading Firefox, Edge, or other browsers:
-
In Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions
-
Click Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content
-
Under Installing Apps, select Don't Allow
Note: This also blocks app updates. You'll need to temporarily allow installation when Chrome needs updating.
Block already-installed browsers
If Firefox, Edge, or other browsers are already installed:
-
In Screen Time, click App Limits
-
Click Add Limit
-
Select the browser app (Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc.)
-
Set the limit to 1 minute
-
Enable Block at End of Limit

How to prevent Chrome deletion
Use App Limits

Go to Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions
-
Click Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content
-
Under Deleting Apps, select Don't Allow
Your child cannot drag Chrome to the Trash.
Screen Time recommended settings
| Setting | Recommended Value | Why |
|---|---|---|

| Content & Privacy Restrictions | On | Enables all restrictions below |
| Safari | Off (blocked) | Forces use of Chrome |
| Installing Apps | Don't Allow | Prevents downloading other browsers |
| Deleting Apps | Don't Allow | Prevents removing Chrome |
| App age rating | 12+ or lower | Blocks most third-party browsers (rated 17+) |

Chrome is rated 17+ in the App Store. If you set age restrictions before installing Chrome, you won't be able to install it. Install Chrome first, then enable age restrictions.
