What is WhitelistVideo advanced protection?
Make WhitelistVideo much harder to bypass by adding Advanced Protection to your child's computer.
Why do I need advanced protection?
Without Advanced Protection, your child could:
- Turn off the Chrome extension
- Use a different browser (Safari, Firefox, Brave)
- Use an incognito/private window
- Remove the extension entirely
With Advanced Protection:
- The extension stays managed in Chrome and Edge
- Incognito, Guest mode and new browser profiles are blocked
- Only you can make changes (with a password)
The installer doesn't block other browsers. Complete the required setup: a separate Standard account for each child, the extension in Chrome or Edge in that account, the installer from whitelist.video/download (opens in a new tab) run as administrator, and every other browser blocked in Microsoft Family Safety (Windows) or Screen Time (Mac). Don't block youtube.com. Optional: block google.com (Google results play video snippets) and set DuckDuckGo (privacy-focused) as the default search engine.
Required on Windows and Mac: Advanced Protection is part of the required setup for every child's computer, together with a Standard child account and other browsers blocked in Family Safety or Screen Time.
How does WhitelistVideo advanced protection work?
Advanced Protection installs a small program on your child's computer. This program:
- Locks the extension - Prevents removal or disabling
- Protects supported browsers - Managed policies apply in Chrome and Edge
- Disables workarounds - No incognito mode, no guest mode, no new browser profiles
- Password protects changes - Only you can turn it off

What about Chromebooks?
Chromebooks cannot use the desktop installer. On a personal Chromebook, Google Family Link can supervise the account, but it cannot prevent the child from disabling or removing an installed extension. If they uninstall it, you're alerted by email. In Family Link:
- Block Guest mode and Incognito
- Require approval for apps and extensions
- Turn off Family Link's own YouTube restrictions (and don't block youtube.com)
To make the extension impossible to uninstall, buy a Google Workspace subscription (about US $5 per month; check Google's pricing for your region), set yourself up as the administrator and force-install it from the Google Admin console. A school-managed Chromebook is already admin-managed.

For tamper-resistant extension enforcement, use a school-managed Chromebook, or a personal Chromebook you manage from the Google Admin console with a Google Workspace subscription, with force-install configured by its administrator.
Do I need advanced protection?
Yes, on Windows and Mac. The extension filters YouTube on its own, but Advanced Protection is what keeps it in place: without it, your child can turn the extension off, remove it, or open an Incognito window. It takes about 5 minutes per computer and is part of the required setup.
How to remove WhitelistVideo advanced protection
Yes. The same installer can uninstall Advanced Protection:
- Windows: Run the uninstaller from Programs & Features
- Mac: Run the uninstaller app

Does my child need this if they don't try to bypass?
Yes: it's part of the required Windows and Mac setup. It matters most if your child:
- Knows how to install or remove Chrome extensions
- Has tried to bypass parental controls before
- Uses the computer unsupervised
Will this slow down the computer?
No. The program uses minimal resources and runs quietly in the background.
