How to install the WhitelistVideo extension on Chromebook

Add the WhitelistVideo browser extension to Chrome on your child's Chromebook. Installation takes about 2 minutes.

⚠️

Personal Chromebook Warning: Installing the extension alone provides basic filtering, but your child can easily remove it on personal Chromebooks. For stronger protection, use Family Link or request school IT deployment.

What do I need to install the extension?

  • Your child's Chromebook
  • Google Chrome browser (pre-installed)
  • Internet connection
  • About 2 minutes

How to install the extension on Chromebook

On your child's Chromebook

  1. Open Google Chrome

  2. Go to the Chrome Web Store - WhitelistVideo

  3. Click the blue Add to Chrome button

  4. A popup appears. Click Add extension

  5. Wait a few seconds. You'll see the WhitelistVideo icon appear in Chrome's toolbar

Note: On school-managed Chromebooks, the extension may be pre-installed by your IT department. If so, skip to the activation step.

How to pin the extension to your toolbar

Make the extension easy to find:

  1. Click the puzzle piece icon in the browser toolbar

  2. Find WhitelistVideo in the list

  3. Click the pin icon next to it

The WhitelistVideo icon now stays visible in your toolbar.

How to activate the extension

The extension is installed but not active yet. Your child can still watch any video until you activate it with a PAC code.

Get your PAC code from the Parents' App

  1. Open the Parents' App on your phone at app.whitelist.video (opens in a new tab)

  2. Navigate to your child's profile

  3. Look for the PAC Code section (a 6-digit code)

  4. Copy or remember this code

What is a PAC code? A Parent Activation Code (PAC) is a unique 6-digit code that connects your child's device to your parental controls. Each child has their own PAC code.

Enter the PAC code on your child's Chromebook

  1. On your child's Chromebook, click the WhitelistVideo extension icon in the Chrome toolbar

  2. A popup appears asking for the PAC code

  3. Enter the 6-digit PAC code from your Parents' App

  4. Click Activate

  5. The extension shows "Connected to [Child Name]"

Success! The extension is now active and filtering YouTube according to your whitelist.

What happens after activating the extension?

The extension is now connected to your parent account:

  • YouTube videos are filtered according to your approved channels
  • Unapproved videos show a "Not on your whitelist" message
  • Your child can request new channels for your approval
  • The whitelist syncs automatically across all their devices

How to check if extension is managed

On school-managed Chromebooks, the extension shows different text:

Personal Chromebook

  • Extension shows normal install
  • Can be removed by clicking "Remove" in chrome://extensions
  • No "Managed" badge

School-Managed Chromebook

  • Extension shows "Installed by enterprise policy" or "Managed by your organization"
  • Remove button is grayed out or missing
  • Extension cannot be removed without admin access

See "Managed by enterprise policy"? This means your school IT has deployed the extension via Google Admin Console. This is the strongest protection level—the extension cannot be removed by students.

How to verify the extension is working

Test the filtering:

  1. Open YouTube.com on the Chromebook

  2. Search for a video from a channel not on your whitelist

  3. Try to play the video

  4. You should see a "Not on your whitelist" message instead of the video

  5. Search for a video from an approved channel

  6. The video should play normally

Working correctly! If approved videos play and unapproved videos are blocked, your extension is properly configured.

  • On school-managed Chromebooks, Chrome Web Store access may be restricted
  • Your IT department needs to approve or force-install the extension
  • Share the school-managed setup guide with your IT department
