How to protect your child's TV with WhitelistVideo

Set up WhitelistVideo on your Android TV or Google TV for a Curated Feed experience — your child sees only a hand-picked grid of videos from channels you've approved. No YouTube homepage, no search, no algorithm recommendations.

What does WhitelistVideo for TV do?

The WhitelistVideo TV app runs in Curated Feed mode — a safe, parent-curated YouTube viewer for your television. It:

  • Shows only videos from channels and playlists you've approved — nothing else
  • No YouTube search, no homepage, no algorithm-driven recommendations
  • Blocks access to unapproved content with a friendly message
  • Lets your child request new channels for your approval
  • Syncs with your parent account in real-time

Always Curated Feed: The TV app always runs in Curated Feed mode. Unlike Android phones where you can toggle between Full YouTube and Curated Feed, the TV app is locked to Curated Feed for the safest big-screen experience. Your child sees only what you've approved.

What TV devices are compatible with WhitelistVideo?

WhitelistVideo works on any TV running Android TV or Google TV, including:

  • Google TV devices — Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer
  • Android TV boxes — NVIDIA Shield TV, Xiaomi Mi Box, Walmart Onn
  • Smart TVs with Android TV — Sony, TCL, Hisense, Philips, Sharp, and other manufacturers
  • Smart TVs with Google TV — Sony, TCL, Hisense, and other manufacturers
⚠️

Not compatible: WhitelistVideo is not available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, or LG webOS. These platforms do not run Android TV.

What do I need to set up WhitelistVideo on my TV?

  • A TV or streaming device running Android TV or Google TV
  • A Google account signed in on the TV (required for Play Store access)
  • A WhitelistVideo parent account (create one at app.whitelist.video (opens in a new tab))
  • Access to the Parents' App on your phone
  • About 5 minutes for setup

How to set up WhitelistVideo on your TV

Quick start steps

  1. Install the app from Google Play Store on your TV
  2. Activate the app using a code from your Parents' App

How does WhitelistVideo work on the TV?

Curated Feed on TV

  • Your child opens the WhitelistVideo app instead of the YouTube app on the TV
  • They see a Curated Feed — a clean grid of videos from your approved channels and playlists only
  • No YouTube homepage, no search bar, no recommendations — just your approved content
  • Videos from approved channels play immediately
  • If your child encounters unapproved content (e.g., via a link), they see a "Request" option

What your child sees

  • Curated grid: Only videos from parent-approved channels and playlists
  • No search or browse: Your child cannot discover unapproved content
  • Channel requests: If they want new content, requests are sent to your Parents' App for approval

What you control

  • Which channels and playlists are approved (manage from the Parents' App)
  • The Curated Feed updates automatically as you add or remove channels
  • Request limits for new channel requests

TV troubleshooting

The app isn't available in the Play Store on my TV

  • Make sure your TV is running Android TV or Google TV
  • Check that a Google account is signed in on the TV
  • Try searching for "WhitelistVideo" in the Play Store on the TV
  • Open the Play Store link (opens in a new tab) on your phone and send the install to your TV remotely

I can't find the app after installing

  • Look in the Apps row on your home screen
  • Some TVs require you to add the app to your home screen manually
  • Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps to find it

My child can still open the regular YouTube app on the TV

  • WhitelistVideo does not remove or block other apps on the TV
  • You can disable the YouTube app: Settings > Apps > YouTube > Disable
  • On Google TV, you can also remove YouTube from the home screen
