Which setup is right for you?
Mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android)
The child app provides a safe, filtered YouTube experience. Your child watches YouTube through our app instead of the regular YouTube app. On Android, parents can choose between Full YouTube with filtering or Curated Feed mode (a hand-picked grid of approved content only).
Recommended: Pair WhitelistVideo with the device's parental controls, complete every setup step, and test the common bypass routes:
- iPhone/iPad: Uninstall the regular YouTube app, approve Screen Time access, and keep YouTube domains permitted so approved videos play. Keep Safari and Chrome, restrict other browser apps, set Deleting Apps to Don't Allow, and control new installations.
- Android: Use Family Link to supervise apps, block the regular YouTube app, and block alternative browsers as apps. Family Link website rules apply to Chrome.
Desktop computers (Windows, Mac)
Protection works through a browser extension in Chrome or Edge. Install our desktop package to:
- Forces the extension to stay installed
- Blocks access to extension settings
- Protect Chrome and Edge with managed policies
Recommended: Keep the child on a Standard account without the administrator password. On Windows, use Microsoft Family Safety to block alternative browser apps; its web filtering is Edge-only. On Mac, use Screen Time to restrict Safari and other browser apps separately.
Chromebooks
Protection is extension-only since Chromebooks don't support installer packages. For managed protection:
- Personal Chromebook: Use Family Link for supervision and alerts, but be aware that the child can disable or remove the extension
- School Chromebook: Contact your school's IT department about enterprise deployment
TV devices (Android TV, Google TV)
The WhitelistVideo TV app provides a curated-only experience on your television — your child sees only videos from channels and playlists you've approved, displayed in a clean grid with no search, no YouTube UI, and no algorithm-driven recommendations. Works with Android TV boxes, Google TV, Chromecast with Google TV, and smart TVs from Sony, Hisense, TCL, and other manufacturers running Android TV.

What you'll need
Before you start, make sure you have:
- Parent Dashboard access — Download the Parents' App (opens in a new tab) or use app.whitelist.video (opens in a new tab)
- A child profile — Create one if you haven't already
- Admin access — For desktop computers, you'll need administrator privileges to install the lockdown package
Protection levels explained
Basic Protection (Extension Only)
- YouTube filtering works
- Child could disable extension
- Good for younger children who won't try to bypass
Standard Protection (Extension + Installer)
- Extension is managed in Chrome and Edge
- Administrator credentials are required to remove the desktop protection
- Other browser apps must be restricted separately
- Recommended for most families
Maximum Protection (Extension + Installer + Child Account)
- Everything above, plus:
- Child cannot install software
- Child cannot change system settings
- Recommended for tech-savvy children
