Which setup is right for you?
Mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android)
The child app provides a safe, filtered YouTube experience. Your child watches YouTube through our app instead of the regular YouTube app. On Android, parents can choose between Full YouTube with filtering or Curated Feed mode (a hand-picked grid of approved content only).
Required: Pair WhitelistVideo with the device's parental controls, complete every setup step, and test the common bypass routes:
- iPhone/iPad: Allow Screen Time access, block the YouTube app (the app's picker in 1.4.8; newer versions ask you to delete it), let the YouTube access check pass, and set the parent PIN. Recommended: Deleting Apps: Don't Allow on your iPhone. Never block youtube.com in Screen Time (keep it off Never Allow; with Only Approved Websites, approve youtube.com and m.youtube.com; Limit Adult Websites is fine); there's no need to block Safari.
- Android: In Family Link on your phone, block the YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids apps, block every browser except Chrome (Family Link's web filter only works in Chrome), and block youtube.com in Chrome (Google Chrome → Manage sites → Blocked; WhitelistVideo doesn't use Chrome, so the app is unaffected). Set the parent PIN in the WhitelistVideo app.
- Optional: block google.com (Google results play video snippets) and set DuckDuckGo (privacy-focused) as the default search engine (Android: in Chrome; iPhone/iPad: google.com in Screen Time, DuckDuckGo as Safari's search engine).
Desktop computers (Windows, Mac)
Protection works through a browser extension in Chrome or Edge. Install our desktop package to:
- Forces the extension to stay installed
- Blocks access to extension settings
- Protect Chrome and Edge with managed policies
Required: a separate Standard account for each child (without the administrator password), the extension in Chrome or Edge in that account, and the desktop installer from whitelist.video/download run as administrator (it locks the extension and blocks Incognito, Guest mode and new profiles). On Windows, block other browsers in Microsoft Family Safety; on Mac, block Safari and other browsers in Screen Time. Don't block youtube.com. Optional: block google.com and set DuckDuckGo as the default search engine.
Chromebooks
Protection is extension-only since Chromebooks don't support installer packages. For managed protection:
- Required: install the extension; in Family Link, block Guest mode and Incognito and require app approval; turn off Family Link's own YouTube restrictions. Don't block youtube.com. Optional: block google.com and set DuckDuckGo as the default search engine
- Personal Chromebook: the child can remove the extension, but you're alerted by email if they do. To make it impossible to uninstall, buy a Google Workspace subscription (about US $5 per month; check Google's pricing for your region), set yourself up as the administrator and force-install it from the Google Admin console
- School Chromebook: already admin-managed; contact your school's IT department about enterprise deployment
TV devices (Android TV, Google TV)
The WhitelistVideo TV app provides a curated-only experience on your television — your child sees only videos from channels and playlists you've approved, displayed in a clean grid with no search, no YouTube UI, and no algorithm-driven recommendations. Works with Android TV boxes, Google TV, Chromecast with Google TV, and smart TVs from Sony, Hisense, TCL, and other manufacturers running Android TV.
- Install the app from the Google Play Store on your TV
- Activate (pair) with a code from your Parents' App
- Set a parent PIN on the profile in the YouTube app
- Disable the YouTube app if your TV allows it (Settings → Apps → YouTube → Disable)
What you'll need
Before you start, make sure you have:
- Parent Dashboard access — Download the Parents' App (opens in a new tab) or use app.whitelist.video (opens in a new tab)
- A child profile — Create one if you haven't already
- Admin access — For desktop computers, you'll need administrator privileges to install the lockdown package

Basic Protection (Extension Only)

Standard Protection (Extension + Installer)
- Extension is managed in Chrome and Edge
- Administrator credentials are required to remove the desktop protection
- Other browser apps must be restricted separately

- Everything above, plus:
- Child cannot install software
- Child cannot change system settings
- The required setup for every child's Windows or Mac computer
